Form or Function?

I thought I would share this little basket from the archives – mainly because of the shape. I really like the shape of this one, I think it’s sweet- but to be honest I don’t make shapes like this much at all these days because I want my baskets to be really ‘functional’. I want them to be useful in a kindergarten setting (I send most of my baskets to kindergartens).

These days I mostly make bowls, dishes, platters and, sometimes, carry baskets – objects I know will be really ‘useful’.

It has long been discussed in craft circles – what matters more – ‘form’ or ‘function’. I believe that ‘beauty’ and ‘function’ both matter and every maker should feel free to experiment with materials in whatever way feels good to them – no matter how ‘functional’ the final object. There is much to be said for ‘play’ and pushing boundaries with materials.

I don’t want to put limits on myself or other makers by stating that something beautiful shouldn’t exist if it isn’t completely ‘practical’. There is so much to be learnt from creating a wide variety of shapes. While on my creative path, I’ve really enjoyed exploring different kinds of shapes with my basketry – some not particularly ‘useful’. At this point I do feel more drawn to creating objects that are really ‘functional’ – I’m enjoying the challenge of working within the parameters of ‘functional’ and striving to make the ‘functional’ beautiful as well. It feels good for me right now. But I always want to be free to experiment with the forms of my baskets – especially if I feel it will help me to learn and grow creatively. No limits, and permission to go ‘back’ to playing with different shapes if I want to.

Do you have any thoughts on the subject of ‘function’ and ‘form’? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Oh, and I don’t think this basket pictured is completely useless – it would look lovely with some dried flowers in it 🌸 for sure.
