“I found I could say things with colour and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for” – Georgia O’Keeffe
There are so many wonderful ways to experience and express ourselves in this world – and all can be art – words, numbers, music, dance, and of course the visual arts. All of these forms of expression have been explored and harnessed by people since the very beginning.
As a child, I found words and numbers – the two main pillars of mainstream western education – really difficult to grasp and understand. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn’t fully enjoy these vast, rich worlds of knowledge. I just found words and numbers really really hard.
But even at a young age I was inspired and moved by the visual arts. The visual arts held deep meaning for me beyond words and numbers. Growing up, I was a ‘visual learner’, and still to this day I feel connected to the world through what I see in nature and through visual arts and crafts.
Now, I am more confident with my words (I won’t comment on the numbers ☺️). And I express my voice through the art and craft of basketry and embroidery. It is fulfilling and a joy.
I’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments. Do Georgia O’Keeffe’s words resonate with you? Do you feel a special connections with the visual arts? Your thoughts and experiences are welcome here.
