Catriona Makes

A blog about basketry, creativity and life

Welcome!

Hi, my name is Catriona. I’m a basket maker living in Naarm / Melbourne, Australia. I started making baskets back in 2019 just as Covid took over the world. I learned my craft from Ruth Woods of Craft School Oz.

I’ve always been creative – over the years I’ve dabbled in drawing, sewing, screen printing, iPad art and embroidery (I still love embroidery and may share some on this blog from time to time).

I decided to start this blog as a place to share my basketry and my thoughts about creativity and life. I hope you’ll follow along. And maybe you’ll be inspired to pick up basketry yourself.

Making baskets is a beautiful, mindful pastime. I create my baskets using a simple coiling technique.  Coil baskets come together slowly, stitch by stitch – they are truly a beautiful evocation of the movement of time and creativity.

I work primarily with raffia that is sustainably grown and harvested in Madagascar, and hand dyed by local dyers here in Australia. I sometimes even do some dyeing myself.
